How the Brain Works – Links 01

Brain Awareness Week (BAW) is a worldwide effort organized by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neuroscience to promote the public and personal benefits of brain research.  This year, BAW is being organised from  March 14-20, 2011.  However, any week is a good week to get to know our brain.

This post is a collection of short videos that can be very useful  in classroom sessions and for students to learn on their own.

As I did my research, I realized that the brain is a star actor on the WWW. There’s a huge overload of information on brain function and neuroscience. So from time to time, I will pick a few really interesting ones to share.

The Brain’s Inner Workings Part I: Structure and Function

Video 1 by NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health)

and Video 2 by NIMH

How the Brain Works

Introductory Videos by UCLA Brain Research Institute and by Bruce H. Dobkin, MD, who directs the neuro-rehabilitation program in the Department of Neurology at UCLA.

Video 1: General organization of a real human brain.

Video 2: How is the human brain different from that of a rat.

How do we reach for a ball? How do we walk?

Video 3: Video 3: Practice makes perfect.

How does practice enable us to learn and retain skills and information? The brain has areas dedicated to your being motivated and appreciated.

Video 4: Brain Plasticity

How can we drive the nervous system to adapt in ways that help restore lost skills after injury from disease? Can we reorganize the brains connections?

And this is the inspiring story that Dr. Dobkin talks about. This is the story of a young girl who had half her brain removed. And magically, little by little, her left brain took over the functions of the right brain.
