To be considered an intelligent person, you need to trust yourself that you would be capable of dealing with issues and making decisions related to accomplishing goals intelligently.

There is nothing wrong with being the smartest person in the room. Yet, it can be truly ugly when someone tries to show off intelligence which is why those with confidence and maturity can display intelligence without looking arrogant in the process. Whether your intelligence is of the street variety of from an academic level, you will need to maintain an air of being humble in order to make the proper presentation.

Employ affirmations as a means of reminding yourself you possess the intelligence needed to do well on a test, perform a job, or increase IQ. Post notes and signs of such affirmations each and every day. You can also keep a journal and pat yourself on the back regarding your bright ways of thinking.

Raise your hand in class or in a formal meeting to reply to inquiries. You can also raise new themes in a meeting. Start discussions which lead people to think. A person who is emotionally secure is never afraid to show intellect in a group.

You could undergo test designed to confirm your intelligence as well as learn how to increase IQ. If an IQ test is available, take part in it. You could ask a counselor to allow you to take part in an emotional intelligence test. Through determining your scores on these tests, you can validate your self-image and embrace your IQ in an easier manner.

You may wish to make comrades out of people who have a tendency to be levelheaded. When you spend time with those who are sharp and intelligent as school or the office, you will not have to dull down your vocabulary. You will be forced to challenge your thought process in the company of those who share your intellectual and emotional abilities and this can increase IQ immensely.

You should feed your brain via studying. Examine projects, social circles, and books that will boost your ability to learn and mature. Your intelligence might have genetic roots and you may need to challenge yourself further to mature it. By learning new and fresh things and taking on larger challenges, you will develop a new feeling of pride in your intelligence.

When did you last tell yourself how great of a person you are? When was the last time you gave yourself a reward for your competence, intelligence, good looks, and talents? If you are like most people, you will be quick to call attention to those things you did that were not so bright but you also do need to take time out and acknowledge the times when you have done things that are worth praise.

The huge personal benefits in acknowledging yourself is significant. Not only will it increase IQ and your self-worth, it can eradicate highly negative thoughts along the lines of thinking you need to be perfect. You need to realize you are still a capable person even when you make a mistake. You are even “okay” when you get into the occasional bad mood. Everyone gets off track at some point and that is okay as long as you are capable of getting things back in order. Just start off by accepting the greatness you possess.

Pull out a blank sheet of paper. Write down a number of glowing, positive qualities that clearly state who you are. The results might prove astonishing. In fact, you could even write “I’m astonishing” as your beginning entry. Ultimately, you want to enjoy each and every second of the day.

Basic Memory Improvent Steps You Can Take Today

Filed under: Improve Memory, Study Tips

If you’re one of many individuals who think that they have a poor memory, then this might be because you don’t have such effective ways in which you are able to not only take on the data, but the way in which your brain processes it. All the same, unless you’re suffering from some sort of disease, disorder or injury, then you ought to have the ability to better your memory.

Basic Improvement

Below we’ll view some assorted ways in which you are able to help to improve your memory.

1. Constantly Pay Attention
If you don’t pay enough attention to something that you wish to learn about, then your mind doesn’t have the chance to encode the data and then store it away for future point of reference. It takes approximately 8 seconds of somebody intently centering on a certain piece of data in order for it to be processed through their hippocampus and then in to the suitable section of their memory center. So it’s crucial that you center on one thing only at a time, and try not to multi-task. If you’re like some individuals, and discover that you become distracted really easily, then search out a quiet corner where you know you will not be disrupted.

2. Make certain you acquire the data in a way which suits the way you learn.
Most of us are optic learners, and so find that they learn best once they’re either reading or viewing matters that they have to know about.  While other people are auditory learners and find it better to learn matters when they’re listening. These types of individuals might find it much easier to memorize data by recording it and then listening to it till it’s remembered.

3. Get all your senses affected
Don’t simply rely on your eyes, even if you’re somebody who learns and remembers matters visually. Why not read aloud what you have to memorize, and attempt and recite it to yourself rhythmically? You will be amazed at how much better your memory gets. Likewise try and relate the data that you’re trying to memorize to colors, textures, smells as well as tastes. A lot of individuals have discovered that by really physically rewriting the data that they have to imprint on to their brain helps them.

4. Associate the data to be gained to something you already know about.
When collecting any fresh data, associate it to data that you already have stored in your memory and which you’re able to recall.

5. Organize the data
If you have to, write matters down in either an address book or diary, or on a calendar. If you’re dealing with much more complex material or data, then take notes and then regroup these notes in to particular categories later on once you have time. If you have to, utilize both words and pictures to help you learn the data that you want to retain in your memory.

6. Learn to comprehend and translate complex material
When you’re attempting to learn more complex material or subjects, then center on simply understanding the basic ideas of the matter instead of memorizing only isolated parts of it. Consider being able to explain to somebody else in your own words about the subject or matter.

7. Rehearse the data that you’ve received
It’s crucial that you review everything you’ve learned every day on the same day, and then review it every now and then. Likewise, if you are able to, over learn about a certain subject or matter, as you’ll frequently find that you are able to begin to recall the data as if it was second nature to you.

8. Be positive and remain motivated
It’s crucial that you keep telling yourself that you wish to learn the matters that you have to remember. Likewise remind yourself that you are able to learn about matters and then remember them. If you really tell yourself that your memory is bad, then this will really hamper not only you, but also your brain in being able to remember matters.

However by being positive, you’re really helping yourself better your memory.

Remove All Distractions to Concentrate Better When Studying

Distractions from outside sources can happen to anyone, anytime or anyplace. It could be anything from an uncomfortable temperature to a noisy atmosphere. You may think it is funny, but being physically uncomfortable can prohibit you from being able to concentrate better for the tasks you need to perform.

Students many times will have neighbors that are noisy when they are living in dorms. This makes it difficult to concentrate better on their homework due the next day. The party in the other room running all through the night makes it next to impossible to focus on your task. Even a telephone ringing over and over again can be enough at times to send you looking for a quiet haven.

If noise is a problem for you, then you need to find someplace to study that is quiet. The school library can be one solution when the dorm is too loud with noise. If the library is not available for the all-nighter you must pull, then opt for some earplugs to gain enough quiet time.

Distractions from outside sources can be such things as insufficient lighting or uncomfortable seats or tables. To be conducive to studying the chairs should be comfortable to sit in, the tables should not be too tall or too short, and there should be sufficient lighting. If you attempt to study in surroundings that are not comfortable and have insufficient lighting, you will just get a sore body and eyestrain instead of focusing on your school work. You will need to fix this if you are to concentrate better.

Now let’s imagine that you found the ideal place for you to study. This place is a serenely peaceful place with no distractive noises it has ideal lighting and the chairs are comfortable. You can start studying. Are there some other distractions that can keep you from focusing on your school work?

This is where distractions from within can show up and cause problems. You stomach could begin to growl with hunger or you body could start to feel tired. You could have little motivation to keep on task, bored silly with the subject, or you could have no interest in the topic at all which would be the worse-case scenario. These are some other hurdles to overcome to concentrate better.

You could be totally unorganized or drifting off into daydreams. Also, you might start thinking you should go through the piles of clutter in your room, since it is such a mess. You could be worried about being the next person let go at your place of employment and not being to pay your bills because of it. Worrying over what other people thinks could also be one distraction. “What if I am no good at this task? What if mistakes are made by me? What if my nerves get in the way?” Questions like these and others could run through you mind, completely distracting you and making it impossible for you to focus your efforts on whatever task you need to perform.

The worse thing that can happen is you doing negative thinking. Your mind keeps telling you that you will not achieve what you are trying to do. Why in the world do you think you can do something this big? You start to get caught up in your mistakes, instead of letting them go, learning how to right them and moving on. External and internal distractions cannot be avoided in your life, and the way you deal with them and rid yourself of them is what counts.

It really can be as simple as all that. You just have to make yourself quit thinking negative things and regain control. Force yourself to think positive and refocus your efforts on the work you need to do. This requires practice, but is necessary for you to concentrate better. If you do not immediately regain your attention, you will once again have scattered thoughts, and your concentration will be gone. It will take a bit of time to regain control of your thoughts, but it is worth the effort.

Information Overload Inhibits Concentration and How To Minimize Detrimental Effects As Stress

For decades, we’ve been all about developing more and more labor saving devices, communication devices, needing more and more information about everything under the sun. Now we’ve become a society that doesn’t just enjoy, but desperately needs the Blackberry, the pager, the cell phone, the laptop and internet access. Through these devices, we receive information every minute, every hour, every day. We have snail mail, email, radio, television, and phone calls demanding our constant attention. We have books, magazines, reports, and articles that must be read and absorbed. Heaven forbid any information should elude us. We feel we must know everything there is to know, every minute of every day. We’re terrified of being out of the loop, or in the dark about anything.

In our quest to know increasingly and because of our fear of being left out from new information, we have come to a point where it is impossible to concentrate on a project, to focus with laser-like energy. We’re much too busy gathering information. When do we have enough?

David Shenk calls this “data smog” and likens it to pollution we find throughout our world. The production and distribution of information in today’s world has become so much easier to do, not to mention the retrieval of said information, thanks to the internet. This unfortunately, produces an overabundance of low quality information coming at you constantly, every day, from a diverse amount of sources.

The speed at which our society changes is mind boggling to say the least. Technology changes with each passing minute; there’s always new new ways to make old jobs easier or even obsolete. Scientific breakthroughs and cultural innovations happen with such rapidity that it’s difficult to keep up. Every day, science fiction becomes science fact. And all of us feel we must run to keep up, keep our skills sharp, learn new skills every day, every year, constantly adapt to an ever changing society and work world.

When the distribution of more information began, it was considered a good thing, but we may have already reached our saturation point, and the flow of information towards us continues, increasing every day. It’s time to limit our use of so much useless information.

Futurologist Alvin Toffler has put together a very detailed study of the acceleration of change and its psychological effects. He foresees a time of severe physical and mental disturbances, which he calls “future shock” syndrome. He likens this to the nervous breakdown people experience due to wartime trauma, called “shell shock.” The rapid changes of our modern life can, and he thinks will, produce a state of helplessness and inadequacy.

Studies have been done to show the direct correlation between constant change and physical illness. People with high life changes are more likely to develop serious illnesses.

Change can bring about one of two conditions. A person can become excited and curious about what happens next, or they can become fearful, confused, and tense. The longer these feelings remain, the more likely that fatigue will set in and the person will experience loss of control and feel highly distressed. Anyone who has experienced these feelings will tell you focus and concentration are out the window at this point. It’s impossible to concentrate under these conditions.

Too long in this kind of stressful situation brings about the instinctive animal reaction—fight or flight. A person can become aggressive in his/her behavior, something that is difficult to sustain for long periods, or it can cause that person to want to run away and avoid the whole painful thing. It can also tip a person into total despair and depression, a complete numbing of their sensations, an inability to move forward.

Unfortunately, anxiety seems to be ever present in our society, as evidenced by the record use of drugs to suppress the symptoms, such as sleeplessness, irritability, constant worry, and digestive upsets. Never have so many people needed so much medication just to make it through their lives.

Maybe it’s time to quiet the incessant chatter and stem the flow of useless information. Then we may better determine what’s important to us and what isn’t, what we need and what we can do without, what’s necessary to our existence and what amounts to pollution of our mental world.

What can we do about this “data smog?” How do we clear our heads so as to focus on the problems and concentrate on solutions? For starters, set the filters on your email, to dump the truly useless junk mail. If you must check your email all day, at least limit the amount you must go through. Throw away the obvious junk mail you receive each day unless it pertains to something you really need.

Try turning off the television a few hours a day; take a break from the news on occasion. Leave your Blackberry, pager, and cell phone at home when you take a vacation. Let your mind and body rest. Focus on what’s important. Remember, you cannot examine every piece of data, or every new web site added to the millions out there already. Don’t let information take control of you; you must control information.

Memory Techniques We Use To Improve Recall

All the memory devices we are considering help to produce ways of putting data together so it makes it much simpler for us to recall it.

1. Group

If you have to recall big groups of numbers or things, then divide them into much littler units. For instance, if you need a very long number, say your social security number, which might be

569724981, then divide it like this: 569 724 981.

2. Classify data according to type

For instance, why not fix up all thirty-seven of Shakespeare’s plays into logical groupings made up as follows: – Comedy, history and tragedies?

3. Rhymed

Utilize the techniques for producing poetry like rhymed, rhythm and alliteration. For instance, if you wish to recall what happened to all of Henry VIII’s wives then you may do the following:

Died, Beheaded, Died

Died, Beheaded, Survived

4. Rules of grammar

This is, for instance, relating to such things as “I” before “E” except after “C”.

5. Spelling

Always take the 1st letter or syllables in order to form a fresh word which spells out the data that you wish to recall.

So if you’re looking to recall the five great lakes for a geography test, then you may say H.O.M.E.S., which then tells you that they’re Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.

6. Narrative

This is a great imaginative procedure, as it helps you to produce a sentence, story, cartoon or visual picture in your brain in order for you to recall some vital data.

7. Map

Utilizing structure helps to bring about a diagrammatic representation of the relationship discovered between major ideas, sub classes and all the supporting detail and data that you have to recall.

8. Arrangement

Put units of data that you need to recall in terms of their location or in chronological order.

9. Going through

Utilizing this device, you’ll either act out, or go through the motions in order to get a feel for an idea.

Write up the word or data that you need to retrieve, and then, utilizing your index finger, go over and trace the shape of the word and see it in your brain.

How To Use Affiliation To Improve Your Memory

Our memory works by recalling matters through affiliation. What this means is that each piece of data we have in our memory is connected to a different piece in one way or another. I’ll start out with simple examples.

If you were given the word, suppose, “apple”, and then you might do something like this in order to recall what an apple is: “red, round, sweet, doctor, tree and fruit”.

Which as you are able to see is where such matters as “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” might be a saying that individuals regularly utilize in order to recall that eating great healthy foods, like fruit, will keep them from getting ill.

Likewise, if you were asked by a few what the 7th letter of the alphabet was, then the chances are you’d start off by stating to yourself “a, b, c, d, e, f, g” and then aloud you’d say G.

During this you’ve been utilizing affiliation, as you know that the first letter of the alphabet is A and you’ve kept on going through them till you’ve ended up with the letter that you were seeking.

While many individuals think that they’ve a bad memory, really, they don’t. As a matter of fact, most of us have truly good memories; it’s just that we’re not well practiced in utilizing them to their full effectiveness. Yet, if this is true, then why do a few individuals find it so grueling to recall certain affairs?

Our memory works utilizing affiliation. If there’s no obvious affiliation between particular matters, then it makes it very hard for us to recall them. Suppose, for instance, you need to recall that the plane you’re catching takes off at 2pm. But, as there’s nothing about this certain plan which would suggest the number 2 to you, then it’s easily blanked out, and unfortunately you might find yourself missing your flight.

But, if as mentioned above, our memory works by affiliation, then we should actively work at discovering a way to produce an affiliation between the two bits of data relating to the flight.

So, for instance, you may imagine in your mind that the plane you have to catch at 2pm has 2 wings. There then is your affiliation “2 wings = 2pm”. In that way, we’re ten times more likely to recall the time at which the flight is due to depart, even once it has gone from our short-run memory.

However, you might well discover that when particular pieces of data are not obviously related, you’ll have to be a little more creative with linking matters together in order to form an affiliation.

However it truly isn’t as hard as it might seem at first. When you were at school, you were always being taught rhymes and acronyms at school that helped you recall matters, so why not utilize the same technique now?

These particular techniques work, as they form a simple to recall, but yet clever affiliation between themselves and the data that it is we are attempting to recall.

The whole idea when utilizing affiliation in order to recollect matters is to be creative. There’s no need for you to invent a rhyme or a poem for each time you wish to recall something, in most cases, simply thinking of a few picture in your mind which links pieces of data together, which is either strange or silly, may make it much simpler to call up certain matters.
